This animated feature creates a dystopian near future that recalls the work of slip stream / sci-fi author Phillip K Dick. Writer-director Saleh creates a colder greyer Europe bisected by high speed underground train tunnels and surrounded by barbed wire. Travelling in these tunnels, the nervous and twitchy Roger sees a beautiful woman, meets a stranger who seems to know him, and hears a mysterious voice in his head giving him instructions. As he enters deeper into the tunnels he stumbles upon a strange conspiracy.
Metropia is a truly beautiful film. The animation operates through a form of photomontage creating an entire world that is similar yet alien to our own. The voice cast includes Vincent Gallo as the insecure Roger, with Juliette Lewis and cult actor Udo Kier adding to the nuances of the supporting characters.
