Undoubtedly one of the most controversial recent Australian films, what starts off as a comparatively simple documentary about a UN sponsored reunion between a mother and daughter takes a dramatic detour when the filmmakers discover the presence of slavery in the Western Sahara. This is where the film truly takes off, as the filmmakers become embroiled in the story, attempting to safeguard their footage and expose their findings against all odds. Yet the story does not simply end when the credits roll. At the film's premiere in Sydney, Stolen's central subject arrived to denounce the work, claiming that she was misrepresented and is not a slave.
Acclaimed director, and producer of Stolen, Tom Zubrycki will attend Revelation to discuss the film and the issues it raises for documentary filmmakers following the screening.
